CIVIL WORKS a support department

PRESENTATION
I’d like to thank M.P MEDIOAMBIENTE’S Management for the excellent treatment, received by all the personnel from day one, likewise all the colleagues from GRUPO M.P. that I have had the pleasure of knowing; and presenting this department these lines, introducing this new memo of APPRECIATION of M.P. INFORMA.

RECORD
The Civil Works Department is located within M.P. MEDIOAMBIENTE and was founded in April 2000.
During the first year it concentrated on the completion of the restoration of the present Head Office of GRUPO M.P. and on the technical support for the Department of Environmental Engineering.

In the second year it concentrated on the economic-technical consolidation of civil works for industrial waste waters purification stations, managing to complete 15 works, with minimum resources and without any fuss but with excellent managerial support.

The Department of Civil Works this year has a turnover of 400 million pesetas (2.40 million Euro), and with the clear intention and expectation of doubling this level the following year.

DEVELOPMENT
The development of the Civil Works Department is presently being carried out in three very clear and differentiated lines.

A. GROUP SUPPORT LINE:
Maintenance and Restoration of the Group facilities are found in this section and it is one of the two pillars of the foundation of this Department whose most significant project has been the restoration of the old Siemens building in the ’Isla de la Cartuja’ for refurbishing as the Head Office of GRUPO MP.

B. ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING SUPPORT LINE:
The second foundation pillar and presently the main activity of the department.

Within this line, once consolidated in the south and centre areas, the projects will be to establish and consolidate ourselves in the East (Levant) along with the cooperation of the local representatives, and to continue and to consolidate the local Zaragoza branch with significant set up resources, of course without ever forgetting the needs of the local branches.

In this way we are trying to improve the support bit by bit in volume and needs to this great environmental engineering activity, investigating and contributing solutions that improve our "turn-key" tenders.

C. INDUSTRY SUPPORT LINE.
This is our new line of work for this year, introduced with great expectations and with the conviction that we want to support the industrial world from its foundations up.

Showing that the great added value of this activity is in resource management.

APPRECIATION
With these lines to thank Seville architect Mr.José Barquín Cortes for his unwavering support and his continuous backing for this department.

AND SEND-OFF
Always with the humble intention of contributing our grain of sand to this great family of GRUPO MP.
An embrace to all:
Angel Chaves Vinagre.
Production Manager. Civil Works Dpt.

LORCA TANNERIES

MP Medioambiente has been encharged with completing the water line of the new treatment plant of the Lorca tannery sector. Traditionally the water coming from the tannery companies has been the principle environmental problem of the area, being the main waste discharge to the river Guadalentín, a tributary of the Segura. The installation is ranked as the most important European project in the complete decontamination of industrial waste waters. The water from the tannery companies is treated in this new treatment plant, with a treated flow rate of 350 m3/h, which gives us an idea of the size of the project. Two totally similar parallel lines exist with the purpose of assuring the operation of the plant at all times.

With the physical-chemical treatment the elimination of highly polluting materials, such as chromium salts and other harmful residues, is achieved. The water coming from the different companies passes through a hydraulic grating and two-step screens, the pumping well being located more than five kilometres from the plant. Once in the plant, the water passes through channels, controlled by gates, to a primary plant in which grease and sands are separated, using aeration equipment for microbubble production. This water is then sent to two large homogenization ponds. Then the water undergoes chemical treatment, properly speaking, with which the ph correction and the elimination of pollutants from the water is achieved by means of its sedimentation in two layered settlement tanks. The outflow water will be a sent to biological treatment in the future.

From the eastern (Levant) branch office all the process of construction of the treatment plant was followed with special interest, so that no detail was left to be improvised. Our presence in the installations was permanent, the work being continuous these last months, since it was attempted to put the first phase of the purification in operation as soon as possible. The completion time can be said to have been a record. In any case the work starts now, the best service must be given to this important client.

The first phase of the Lorca tannery wastewaters treatment plant is already in operation, which means a solution to a longstanding problem in the area. This work has meant an important challenge for the eastern (Levant) branch and it provides an important reference for future projects. Definitively an important work of which we all can feel proud.

With these lines we wish to thank AQUAGEST for the trust placed in MP MEDIOAMBIENTE, to make possible the construction of this plant.

FRANCISCO VENTO, S.A. industrial waste water purification station paper factory

Francisco Vento, S. A., is a company dedicated to the production of biclass paper from waste paper, destined for the national market, at present it is immersed in a program of activities directed at the continuous improvement of their facilities in the Valencian municipality of Buñol. The program has had a special impact in the adaptation of its waste discharge to the current municipal legislation of the Drains Services Public Body of the Generalitat Valenciana [Government of the Community of Valencia].

MP MEDIOAMBIENTE has been the company selected by Francisco Vento, S.A. to make the effluent acceptable for the requirements of the Administration. The first phase of the work began during the first trimester of the year 2001 with the work of recirculation of the process waters, the optimisation and control of the water consumption. In this way, at first it was intended to provide the company with independence in the availability of water for its productive process, and with sufficiently homogeneous conditions both as regards flow rate and pollutant load of this water, for the design of later treatments. The conclusions reached after carrying out the different programmed operations resulted in the design of a water treatment plant, that basically consists of standardization, physical-chemical treatment by flotation (designed for 50 m3/hour), aerobic biological treatment with thickening of biological sludge by flotation (designed for 15 m3/hour) and mechanical dehydration of sludge with a centrifuge.

Certain unavoidable special circumstances in Francisco Vento, S.A., limited aspects of the installation design, because of which certain requirements had to be met, such as integrating the water treatment plant in the actual factory, very limited space available (approximately 250m2), the impossibility of carrying out civil work and discharge flow rate to the public drainage network of approximately 300 m3/day (which implies the reuse of 70% of the physical-chemically treated water in the actual industrial process).

After the start-up of the installation in December 2001, we have been able to confirm a very
notable improvement in the pollution parameters most characteristic of the paper industry, such as:

COD: 90-95 %
BOD5: 90-95 %
SS: 95-98 %

Thus, optimum values of these parameters have been fully reached, guaranteeing the correct discharge of these waters to the public drainage network, according to current legislation; on the other hand reducing the drainage charges for Francisco Vento, S.A.

strong commitment to the textile sector with SÁEZ MERINO

After the successful start-up of the compact flotation system (FL125) in the factory that Sáez Merino has in Cheste, Mp Medioambiente has made a strong commitment in the water branch of the textile sector.

This system is sized to treat 125 m3/hour of waste water from an aerated pond that serves as homogenizer and semi-biological reactor, managing to achieve an efficiency of about 98% in the elimination of solids in suspension, likewise an outflow COD of around 200 mg/l.

The plant is highly automated and is set-up to be able to operate as a biological sludge clarifier or as physical-chemical treatment by flotation.

First I’d like to thank the Sáez Merino personnel that have participated in this work, for their great willingness and the good treatment received.

With this important reference work Mp Medioambiente wishes to consolidate and to reinforce its image within one of the most dynamic and emergent sectors in the water treatment and purification market.

Finally, on behalf of the Valencia branch, congratulations to all those involved in this project, since they have demonstrated their great professionalism and good work.
Moisés Torres Cebrián.

IV purification TECHNICAL WORKING DAY

In the centre of the Jerte Valley, in the province of Caceres, on the 26th. February last, the IV PURIFICATION TECHNICAL WORKING DAY took place, aimed at agro-alimentary engineering and based on the ANAEROBIA and BIODESTIL technologies. Set up by MP MEDIOAMBIENTE in two important industries of this natural park, the AGRUPACIÓN DE COOPERATIVAS DE VALLE DEL JERTE (ASSOCIATION OF COOPERATIVES OF VALLE DEL JERTE) and SAN-MER (olives factory). Technologies applied to discharges with a high organic load in the first case and high conductivity in the second.
Along with MP MEDIOAMBIENTE’s technicians the University of Valladolid professor, Mr. Fernando Fernández Polanco, the quality control manager of the municipal company Aguas de Burgos, Mr. José Antonio Rodríguez, as well as the Quality and Environment Manager of the la Agrupación de Cooperativas (Association of Cooperatives), Ana Alfonso, participated; all of whom we thank for their presence and valuable contribution.
The numbers attending exceeded the initial forecasts and a significant part of the engineering companies that work in agro-alimentary sectors were represented. Some industries interested in these technologies also attended, whether due to problems with their waste discharge, or because of the advantages of Anaerobic purification: minimum sludge production, low operating cost, etc.
From the explanations and reasons for the solutions adopted, to the visit, after the lunch, to both purification plants, those attending showed great satisfaction as the day developed.
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those people that have made it possible that the waters of the river Jerte, which have always flowed continuously, can now run crystalline and clean.
Congratulations to all.

Francisco Balsera Cubero.
