ENVIRONMENT TAKES ON NEW CHALLENGES

In the industrial-effluent treatment field, where production processes are constantly evolving to accommodate new technology and raw materials, as well as new quality standards, the ability to move into new industrial segments, or adapt to alterations in a known discharge, are key factors in our company’s expertise.

To do so, we can draw on over 10 years of experience simulating unit effluent treatments in our Isla de la Cartuja facility, extrapolated to real-life plants. The large number of installations MP MEDIOAMBIENTE has built and commissioned over the years enables us to take on this type of project with confidence and determination.

In-depth studies by our R&D team, essentially based on laboratory tests and a pilot simulation plant, revealed the most adequate solution for treating effluents originating in the production of potato crisps and snacks, and enabled us to provide the client (Snacks de Castilla y León) with guarantees that won us its trust.

A few months after contracting, the construction stage has been successfully completed and the time for drawing initial conclusions has come.

Much of this success came from our comprehensive approach for the project (turnkey delivery) spanning the installation and commissioning of the wastewater treatment plant, along with the associated civil works, and ensuing maintenance, bringing a solution that encompassed the full range of requirements in the industry.
Industrial potato processing generates pollution on a number of ways. For one, solid content in the effluent is high, from the potato cleaning and peeling operations. Also, the water carries high quantities of dissolved pollutants, due primarily to the starch from hot cutting and washing (whitening) of the potatoes. Frying occurs immediately thereafter, yielding high quantities of waste oil from periodic cleaning of fryers. Flavour adding and packaging, the last steps in the production process, generate no pollution.

Clean-up here involved separating the two main water discharges, i.e. the washing and peeling effluents from the cutting and whitening effluents.

The first has high (7 500 mg/l) levels of solids in suspension, from peelings and silts, and was treated with a system of successive filters and a circular grit trap, eliminating small-sized particles as well as the silt.

The second, involving dissolved pollutants (COD=16 000 mg/l), led to the choice of a biological treatment using activated sludge, yielding up to 98.3%. And for the generated sludge, we incorporated a dehydration system.

PINTO & CRUZ AMBIENTE OPORTO

In April, the company PINTO & CRUZ AMBIENTE constituted by MP and the company PINTO & CRUZ took advantage of the important international trade fair "ALIMENTARIA DE LISBOA" to officially introduce itself.

This new engineering company was born with a clear vocation, that of becoming the business leader in the Portuguese water treatment market.

This project is managed by the engineering firm NUNO PAIVA, and boasts the support, technology and experience of the two large companies that it is comprised of, particularly that of MP ENVIRONMENT, when it comes to technical training, Engineering support, manufacturing, and commissioning of installations. These are priority sectors, agro-alimentary, textile, tanning, paper industry, etc.

With regards to the actual fair itself, "ALIMENTARIA DE LISBOA", we are able to say that the stand was visited by numerous clients, both from Spain and from Portugal, some of whom with obvious needs to resolve their waste problems.

We would like to extend our best wishes and total support for this new project, PINTO & CRUZ AMBIENTE.

TREATMENT OF HIGHLY POLLUTE EFFLUENTS

In March this year, MP ENVIRONMENT commissioned a wastewater treatment plant for Valle del Jerte Co-operative Group.

This plant compounds three wastewater treatment systems, with numerous technical innovations. To design and develop this plant, specifically intended for treating highly polluted wastewater, MP ENVIRONMENT joined efforts with Valladolid University.

Effluents come from a cherry liqueur distillery (a pioneering one in Spain), as well as the mixture of effluents built up in a large-capacity pool over recent years, originating in this distillery as well as in a cheese factory, a marmalade factory, and vegetable waters of an olive-oil mill, all of which are located in this development.
Significant advantages of this plant include the use of the sludge in farming and of the methane as fuel.

This project was carried out through the European programme LIFE, promoted by the Environment Directorate General, through the Environment Protection Authority of the Council of Extremadura

MP ENVIRONMENT, through the combination of the 3 systems, can count on significant technical innovations, namely:
Physico-chemical innovations, using dissolved air flotation, UASB-type treatment, and activated sludge separated by flotation. From inlet COD parameters ranging from 25 000 mg/l to 100 000 mg/l, and significant suspended solid content, discharge parameters match Water Law table 3 requirements, as monitored by Tajo hydrographic authorities and the Extremadura environmental agency.

The pollution this plant treats equates with that a 40 000-inhabitant population would produce.

In the words of Ana Alfonso, the technical person in charge of this project, it constitutes a major success for all.

SECTOR TRADE FAIRS

Following a proven line of actions in the sector and with the clear objective of consolidating the existing relation with current clients and establish relations with potential clients in the future, MP ENVIRONMENTAL has exhibited at two important trade fairs, thus promoting the company image in these sectors vital to the future development of the company:

EXPOMATEX (Textile Sector) Barcelona - 27/31 March

INTERALIMED (Agro-alimentary Sector) Valencia - 12/16 April.

The professional nature of these trade fairs has been reflected in the direct solicitation of numerous offers (25 in total), as well as the registering of new clients (60 files opened) and collaborators in Administration, Consulting, Technological Institutes, Associations, Machinery Manufacturers, etc.)

The pilot biological plant is outstanding among the treatment techniques presented, where treatment was simulated using the active sludge of a real waste. Also the classic pilot methacrylate plant, simulating chemical physical treatment by means of flotation in dissolved air (DAF).

Worth mentioning too, is that thanks to our meeting with SAEZ MERINO (leading textile sector company) while exhibiting at EXPOMATEX, an important project in Valencia has been contracted that will open the way for us to enter this difficult and competitive sector.

TECHNICAL MEETINGS ON WATER-TREATMENT TECHNIQUES
at the national canned and preserved fish and seafood manutacturers association
(ANFACO)

On May 30th a number of conferences on water treatment for the canned and preserved fish sector were held at the ANFACO headquarters in Vigo. Those attending included companies associated with ANFACO and demonstrated great interest and enthusiasm with regards to the solutions MP MEDIOAMBIENTE is contributing to the canned foods sector.

After the presentation and introduction by Association's representative, our Managing Director, Cesar Rivas, opened the session by a presentation of the company's new installations, the improvement projects and new technology studies currently underway.
He then opened the way for the other speakers, who were to discuss the sector's problems of waste water, characteristic parameters, the different solutions implemented by MP MEDIOAMBIENTE in other companies as well as the new technologies currently under development, evidence of the great steps forward that are being made in the field of water treatment.

The final discourse was closed by the representative of the group of companies denominated Toysal, which consisted in proposals for the successful management of sludge and waste generated by water purifiers.
The discourses were followed by a visit to one of the Association's buildings for the presentation of one of our FL-5 flotation unit. Here the visitors were given an insight into how the system works which would serve them in their subsequent visit to one of our water purifiers at the Sancomar plant, in Cangas del Morrazo, Pontevedra that MP has had installed and in operation for 2 years. Here a demonstration was given of a physical-chemical treatment by flotation for the dehydration of sludge. Particular interest was shown in the operability and reduced size of the equipment.

The day was brought to a close with an aperitif laid on for the visitors at the Ría de Vigo Golf Club.

We would particularly like to show our appreciation to Asociación Nacional de Fabricantes de Conservas de Pescados y Mariscos for their courtesy and of course to those who attended this event, for their interest in finding out about the solutions that MP Medio Ambiente offers its clients.
