The Environment Area of MP Group’s Engineering, Services and the Environment Division, in a Joint Venture with FERROVIAL - CADAGUA, on 28 May, was awarded the tender for drafting the project and carrying out the works for the Urban Wastewater Treatment and Purification plant in the natural site of Marismas del Odiel: Biological treatment of the surrounding urban areas (Punta Umbría, Aljaraque, El Rompido), Huelva. The project, called by the Empresa Pública de Gestión Medioambiental de Andalucía EGMASA (the Spanish Government Environmental Management Company), in total will cost €11,412,526 (+VAT).

This project will increase the water treatment capacity of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and improve the treatment offered by the area’s current WWTP. At present, water from both Punta Umbría and El Portil is treated in the existing WWTP using a physical/chemical treatment. This project will extend the current plant on the same plot of land, doubling its current treatment capacity in a plant of 96x247 m2

This WWTP is situated in an area of great environmental risk as it is surrounded by the Natural Parks of the Marismas del Odiel and Los Enebrales and the Natural Reserve of the Laguna del Portil

This project will design the plant to have a treatment capacity ranging between 13,760 m3/day, to serve the estimated 68,000 inhabitants in low seasons, and 28,400 m3/day, to serve the estimated 142,000 inhabitants in peak seasons. The contracted treatment process includes the following: the pre-treatment process, improving the existing physical/chemical process, primary settling, biological reactor, secondary settling, tertiary treatment with ultraviolet and sludge treatment by dewatering.

This WWTP is situated in an area of great environmental risk as it is surrounded by the Natural Parks of the Marismas del Odiel and Los Enebrales and the Natural Reserve of the Laguna del Portil. Therefore, it is imperative that whilst the plant is being constructed all precautions are taken to protect the surrounding environment. The Marismas del Odiel WWTP makes MP a reliable candidate for other large-scale urban projects requiring highly efficient solutions which, as with this tender, ensure the preservation of the environment and minimal environmental impact in a large natural expanse such as the mouth of the rivers Tinto and Odiel.
