City of Justice building, Malaga.

Opening day is getting closer. The City of Justice building, the largest administrative building in Andalusia, is finally set to open at the end of 2007. It will be used by a total of 5,000 people each day, of whom 1,500 will be staff and the remainder visitors.

The building, the first of its type to be built in Andalusia, was designed by the architect José Seguí. It will house 88 judicial organs and provide a common headquarters for the seven major court facilities at present scattered around the city.

To give some idea of its size, the new building covers an area roughly equal to that of two football pitches like La Rosaleda. It has five storeys, a basement and a semi-basement.

MP was awarded the contract to provide the entire vertical transport system, comprising 10 escalators and 27 lifts.

Teatinos area has 52,000 square metres of floor space and represents an investment of 66 million euros. The ground floor of the complex has a reception area, 35 courtrooms, the night court, the general and civil registries, a wedding room, a cafeteria and an assembly room. Nine criminal and nine magistrates’ courts will be located on the first floor, together with the juvenile court and the lawyers’ and prosecutors’ associations.

The second floor will house the remaining magistrates’ courts and the specialist and translation services, while the third floor will be occupied by the Labour Court and the Administrative Court, the probation service and the library.

The winning tender for the project was submitted by a consortium comprising Ferrovial-Agromán, Sando and Inabensa. MP was awarded the entire vertical transportation system, including 10 intense traffic escalators with glass balustrades and energy saving systems based on variable frequency drives, 23 machineroom-less electric passenger lifts with gearless technology capable of carrying 450 kgs. at a speed of 1.6 m/s and 1 1000 kg goods lift.

A project of such complexity has required a huge effort in human and technological resources. Numerous people have been involved from many different departments ranging from special lift engineering in Zaragoza and Seville right through to the assembly departments. The installation management for the project installation was handled by Abraham Lera, and the work ended in the first quarter of 2006. Following this period, the business unit in Malaga led by Juan Carlos Mier-Terán carried out all the work necessary to finish, commission and put into operation all the lifts and escalators. These tasks were completed in April 2007.

The keys to the City of Justice building, Malaga, were handed over to the Andalusian Regional Government’s Minister for Justice, María José López, by the Minister for the Economy, José Antonio Griñán, last July. The handing over of the keys was followed by a tour of the inside of the building, during which the Ministers were accompanied by over 100 leading legal authorities and individuals.

Throughout the key presentation ceremony, MP provided transport with our recently installed mechanical escalators and lifts.
