The Environment Area has been the successful bidder in the tender for the construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Playa Macenas urban complex, which is located in the municipality of Mojácar in Almeria. The plant is due to be completed and operational in the summer of 2008.
The plant is buried under the

The contracted project includes a water treatment system based on MBR technology (Membrane Biological Reactor). The most unique feature of the installation is how the building in which the treatment plant is to be located has been completely integrated into the natural surroundings of the area in question. As a result of the limited space required by the MBR system, the installation can be enclosed within the golf course of the estate. The treated water will be used to irrigate the golf course and green spaces within the complex.
The high quality of the water obtained using the MBR system and the reduced dimensions required to install this technology have been key for being awarded this project. The need for a sustainable solution to the demands for water of a certain quality and quantity for golf courses, particularly in dry areas, as well as the MBR system level of integration with the surrounding areas provide real arguments in favour of MBR systems in comparison with others. In the Mojácar plant, the membrane system makes maximum integration possible: the visual impact is minimised as are noise and odours, since the treatment plant may be hidden within the golf course, which is also irrigated by the water treated by the MBR.
