On 30th January, MP’s
Environment Area, in a joint
venture with Ferrovial and
Cadagua, was awarded the
tender to design and carry out a project
to expand the Río Verde Drinking Water
Treatment Plant (DWTP), which supplies
water to the Western Costa del Sol area.
All renovation and expansion work on
the plant must be carried out without
causing any interruptions to the water
supply service provided by the plant.
The project, which was announced by
the Andalusian public enterprise for
environmental management, EGMASA, is
for a total of 23,608,677.23 (+ VAT) and
is to be completed within 36 months.

The plant to be designed in this project
will have a water treatment capacity of
4,000 litres/second (14,400 m3/hr). It
will include a purification treatment for
water from the Concepción reservoir
(Istán municipal area), which will consist
in dosing CO2, flocculation-sedimentation,
sand filters and activated carbon filters.
The project shall also consider treating
sludge using thickening, dewatering and
storage systems. Lastly, it will include the
complete renovation of the monitoring,
sludge dewatering, reagents and pumping
buildings. All renovation and expansion
work on the plant must be carried out
without causing any interruptions to the
water supply ser vice provided by the plant,
which represents a significant challenge for
the Joint Venture.
This DWTP, which is operated by ACOSOL
(state company for water supply and
sanitation on the Costa del Sol), is located
in an extremely significant area in terms
of tourism: los Monchones (Marbella).
The plant supplies water directly to the
entire Western Costa del Sol area between
Benalmadena and Manilva.
Río Verde is the first public water supply
project to be under taken by MP’s
Environment Area. With this project, a new
line of business begins for the company,
completing the range of wastewater
treatment activities developed by the area
thus far.
