Successful launch of WTP in Balboa Iron & Steel Works.

The end of last year saw the opening of the new wastewater treatment plant of the Balboa Iron & Steel Works II located in Jerez de los Caballeros, Badajoz.

The plant is currently operating at only a quarter of its production capacity. However, as new production lines are launched in the factory, the volume of wastewater volume shall also increase.

The new plant has been designed to treat all of the wastewater generated by the Balboa Iron & Steel Works I and II. The water engineering has been developed with the aim of directing the wastewater from all factory processes to the new facility, thus simplifying the whole water treatment process.

The plant has a capacity of 4,800m3/day. The purified water is treated to be reused in the factory. Therefore, the wastewater generated and the treated water form a closed loop system.

The treatment process implemented is comprised of the following stages:

  • Screening of solids.
  • Pumping and sifting of wastewater.
  • Removal of sand and grease.
  • Aeration.
  • Chemical coagulation and flocculation treatment of wastewater
  • Physical decanting treatment.
  • Slow sand filtering of clarified water.
  • Storage and pumping the treated water to the factory.
  • Thickening of sludge.
  • Homogenization and conditioning of sludge.
  • Dewatering of sludge.

In addition to the water treatment described above, the project included the following elements:

  • Control of the water supply collector from a reservoir to the factory using hydraulic actuated valves.
  • Safety well for storage of the runoff from the factory and subsequent treatment in the plant, before being channelled into the waterway.
MP’s Services Area shall be providing the Balboa Iron & Steel Works with maintenance services and technical assistance for the WTP.

The wastewater generated and the treated water form a closed loop system

The entire execution phase of the project was completed in around eleven months. The developer, contractor and project manager all agreed that this was a very short timeframe, considering the enormity of the work carried out. The desire to ensure the satisfaction of the client by resolving the problems involved in the treatment of wastewater in Balboa efficiently and quickly motivates us to continue working with this important corporate group in any future projects that it undertakes. It also motivates us to continue working in a sector in which MP already has successful projects under its belt, such as the renovations carried out in the Sevillana Iron & Steel Works and in many other industries in the metallurgy sector
