The Krustagroup Group has
awarded MP’s Environ ment
Area the tender for building a
wastewater treatment plant in its
new prawn processing plant, located in el
Prat de Llobregat.
The most important conditions in terms
of the design of this project are a lack of
space and a minimal production of sludge.
MP carried out an extensive audit of the
different flows of wastewater generated
in the process. The results indicated the
possibility of implementing a treatment
process based on an MBR-type aerobic
biological reactor, a technology which fits in
with the initial design conditions per fectly.
Moreover, the reactor has been constructed
completely underground, with its sur face
used for the movement of heavy vehicles in
the loading bay area, resulting in a minimal
use of useful space. In addition, after the
continual operation of the plant in the month
of June, no sludge was produced, meaning
that expectations regarding this condition
have been fully met.

During the audit, three types of wastewater
were defined: wastewater from the
defrosting, cooking and cooling tunnels. All
the wastewater, which has a high count of
suspended solids, is treated in the systems
proposed by MP. The wastewater from the
cleaning, cooling and sluicing processes
has a moderate count of suspended solids
and therefore bypasses the water treatment
plant, so that the end combination fully
complies with the specifications. Finally, the
brine is collected and managed externally.
Subsequently, the same client, Krustagroup,
again requested MP’s collaboration for the
development of a water treatment plant in
its new prawn and cephalopod processing
plant in La Rabida, Huelva. This project is
currently at the engineering stage.
